Cyclone Batsirai was one of five storms to strike Madagascar in less than a month. Convoy of Hope quickly sprang into action, providing emergency relief to those in the cyclone’s path.
Batsirai affected more than 94,000 individuals, displacing a large majority. The cyclone also damaged or destroyed more than 800 schools and more than 50 medical facilities.
At its peak, Cyclone Batsirai packed wind gusts of up to 143 mph, making it the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. At least 30 people have been killed, with three young children among them.
Gabriel Filiastre and his family took shelter in a local hotel while the cyclone struck his community. “My house is completely flooded,” he told The Associated Press. Gabriel explained that the cyclone destroyed many of the homes in his area. One of the walls in the hotel where they sought shelter collapsed, as did the ceiling in multiple rooms. “We need help,” he said.
With help from a local church partner, Convoy is in the process of delivering food, water, and other supplies to people in need of relief.
