Shortly after 1 a.m. CST on Wednesday morning, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Guatemala. Convoy of Hope was quick to respond. Although the full extent of the damage is still unknown, Convoy of Hope can confirm that its partners in the area are safe and accounted for.
“The quake caused landslides on roads, damage to houses, and power outages, but there are no reports of casualties or injuries thus far,” said Ryan Grabill of Convoy of Hope’s International Disaster Services team. “The Guatemala team has checked in and is safe.”
Residents of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico felt the earthquake early on in the morning of February 16. Aftershocks soon followed, registering Richter scale responses as high as 4.5. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Tiquisate, a town 80 miles from Guatemala’s capital city. Guatemala’s Emergency Management Department began damage assessments on the morning of the quake.
Photos from the disaster zone showed trees uprooted, landslides covering roads, and power outages throughout the affected area. Thankfully, no loss of life has yet been reported.
Convoy of Hope will maintain communications with in-country partners as the full extent of the damage becomes more apparent.
“We appreciate your prayers for Guatemala and everyone impacted by this event,” Ryan said.
