Haiti

January 12th 2010 will be forever etched into the memory of all Haitians and most of the world. The 7.0 magnitude quake that hit Haiti at 4:53 PM was the strongest earthquake to shake the country since 1770 and round 250,000 people were killed. The earthquake left the nation destroyed with more than 1.5 million people made homeless and 75% of the capital, Port-au-Prince being destroyed.
Convoy of Hope had been active in Haiti for a number of years feeding over 10.000 children every day. Days before the earthquake, our warehouse had just been restocked with over 1 million meals.
Immediately following the earthquake COH staff was able to start handing out emergency food parcels and water and was able, through our local partners, to provide basic medical care to survivors.
So far, Convoy of Hope has been able to distribute more than 10 million meals, has served more than a million people and is making more than 165.000 liters of clean and safe drinking water available to the population.
In the next three years Convoy of Hope has identified the following goals.
- Feeding Program – Convoy of Hope will attempt to feed 45.000 children every day. This daily meal is, for many children, the only meal they will receive.
- Infrastructure – Convoy of Hope will help to rebuild schools, community centers and churches.
- Water and Sanitation – Convoy of Hope will educate people on hygiene and sanitation plus continue to make safe and clean drinking water available through family size water filters and larger communal water filter points.

More than six months have passed since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed upwards of a quarter million people and left 1 million homeless. In the days after the earthquake, Haiti — which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere — was deluged with help from around the world. Among the first to provide emergency relief was Convoy of Hope, which was already in country.

They are now saying that Haiti will take 10 years to return to normal. We are wondering how they judge normal. Food is being distributed to more areas. All of the aid agencies are working together. The U.N. is dividing them up into clusters with different short and long term responsibilities. COH has been involved [...]
