Water filter project Somaliland
Providing people with clean and safe drinking water represents the largest global challenge of the 21st century. Access to improved water and sanitation are generally the first steps toward sustainable communities and the end of poverty and illiteracy. In 2000, all of the world’s countries and leading development institutions agreed to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which range from cutting in half the number of people without access to safe drinking water to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Michel Camdessus, has stated that no other MDG can be met unless the water/sanitation targets are met.
Convoy of Hope Europe would like to expand their bio-sand filter construction and distribution program into Somaliland and Somalia. Currently, COHEU has a partner organization in Sudan that builds and distributes bio-sand filters in eastern Sudan, refugee camps south of Khartoum, and in Darfur. COHEU is proposing to build and distribute 100 bio-sand filters in Hargeisa and eventually expand the program to Mogadishu. This would initially impact as many as 2,000 people. In summary, the main objective of the proposed program is to provide Somalis access to clean and safe drinking water.
The building cost (including all materials, transport and salaries) is 165€. This water filter will provide clean water to a whole family for many years to come. Please consider making a onetime donation of 165€. Please consider making a monthly donation of 14€ towards the building of a water filter.
